1. Iasitera I owe a lot of my interest in music from the farthest-flung places to my pal Paul Hostetter. Over many visits over many years, he threw traditions and recordings at me, often while fixing my poor neglected instruments in his shop. Without Paul, I would certainly have never heard artists from Madagascar like D’Gary or Johnny Bass or Tarika Sammy, the original configuration, who came to visit Audrey and me in Virginia. We still have a valija they left with us, strung with bits of gourd and unbraided bicycle brake cable. Germain Rakotomavo, another of the respected Malagasy players, recorded this 1930s piece composed by Razafimahefa.
Powerful collection rooted in the stories that must be re-told. Played by some of the most generous community music people I’ve met during my foray into Old Time music.
This CD is a keeper! Ellen B. (Elly) Marshall
This rendition of Virgil Anderson's "Jenny Hang the Kettle On" is wonderful. It perfectly grabs the simplistic beauty of Virgil's version, but has such clarity. Amazing album! Payton Scott
Gorgeous fingerstyle guitar playing from this Portland, Oregon musician that captures the spirit of American Primitive in dazzling detail. Bandcamp New & Notable Aug 30, 2021
On “Meet Me By the River,” Dawn Landes’s self-described “Nashville record,” buoyant country melodies settle deep into lush instrumentation. Bandcamp New & Notable May 7, 2018
Great choice of music, expertly played and sung. Nicely produced. I hope to see The Onlies live, asap. This is an album I listen to over and over. Karamogo
